Editor's Review:

PrivateInternetAccess.com provides a comprehensive VPN service. It allows you to use the internet anonymously, rerouting your location through over 2000 servers from around the world. It also offers unlimited bandwidth and the vast majority of features we’d hope to find from a top VPN service provider. In addition, there are plenty of protocol options and a variety of ways to contact customer services if you need assistance.

The system can be installed on well over 30 different platforms (though it doesn’t appear to include games consoles). The compatible platforms include Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android, and various open VPN’s. There are gateways throughout Europe, North America, Asia and other parts of the world, too.

All combined, this makes for a versatile VPN service, allowing you to freely roam the internet without restrictions. For example, if you wish to watch BBC iPlayer form the USA, you’d normally be restricted. This isn’t a problem with Private Internet Access as you can simply choose a British server so that your computer or device appears to be in the UK.

A few additional features are worth mentioning, too. The kill switch allows you to pick a bunch of programs which will automatically shut down if the VPN connection fails. This means that you aren’t at risk from your programs transmitting any data which can be linked back to you, whilst not being tunnelled through the VPN.

We were also pleased to see that anti-leak features are in place, should the system go down. Again, this simply means that your personal data won’t be leaked to undesired sources if the VPN should fail. Your information is also encrypted, and PrivateInternetAccess sets everything up so that you are much safer when using public wi-fi hotspots in cafes, bars and airports.

You can use up to 5 devices simultaneously, which is good to see as often you can only use one or two, or end up paying a lot extra to add more devices. There’s unlimited bandwidth as well, so you don’t need to worry about how much you browse or download, plus the service supports P2P and VoIP, so file exchanges and personal meetings aren’t a problem.

We were impressed by the level of customer support available through Private Internet Access. You can initially talk to a member of staff using the live chat feature (which also shows you when they’re online). Although this isn’t always so simple when requesting assistance after you’ve joined, it’s still possible. There’s a detailed FAQ and a range of installation and ease-of-use guides to explore. A few more videos would help users, but generally we found that the software was easy enough to use once you’d explored it for a while.

PrivateInternetAccess.com provides plenty of useful VPN services and additional tools for novices and more seasoned VPN users. Whilst it might take a little time getting used to how it all works, there is enough information provided to help you out with most issues. The range of protocol options, servers and server locations, as well as the flexibility of the system over a range of platforms, makes this a very adaptable system indeed. What’s more, it’s very affordable, particularly if you consider taking out the 12 month contract.
