HideMe is one of the better known VPN services around. It offers a free option for people who can’t afford to pay for the service, plus a Premium account for anyone who requires unlimited data transfers. It also supports a great range of protocols and allows up to 5 VPN connections to run on desktop and mobile devices.
There are three packages to choose from, each with its own benefits. The reason Hide.Me is pretty well known is probably because it offers free VPN. This free option allows you to switch between three locations (Canada, Singapore and the Netherlands) and to transfer up to 2GB of data. You can only run the VPN on one device at any given time, though, and you are reliant on the ‘best available’ bandwidth to support your online activity, which can be inconsistent.
The Plus membership improves on much of this by offering servers in 28 locations around the world, plus unlimited bandwidth. It also provides up to 75GB of data transfer per month and full protocol support (including OpenVPN, Softether, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP, IPsec and IKEv1 and IKEv2). However, you may still only run one connection at any given time.
Pay for the Premium account and the limits are taken away, with unlimited data transfer and up to 5 simultaneous connections. Port forwarding (allowing access to the SOCKS proxy, dynamic port forwarding or fixed IP addresses) is also available, allowing you a greater degree of control.
Obviously, the free service offers an unbeatable price (to our knowledge there are no services which pay you to use them!) but the reliability of the connections and the lack of control you have are troublesome. Meanwhile, the Plus membership is a decent option if you don’t need to transfer large amounts of data. We’re unconvinced, however, that upgrading to the Premium membership really offers good value for money as it’s quite expensive (or, at least, above industry standard) and doesn’t offer as many features as you’ll find elsewhere.
If you’re struggling to find VPN services which have all the protocol options you’re looking for, Hide.Me might be a decent option. Also, if you really can’t afford to pay anything for a proxy, you might consider this site. Otherwise, we feel that you don’t quite get enough tools and features to warrant the high sales price of HideMe’s Premium package.
